Cloning a Project can be a great way to save time and effort when starting a new project, particularly when working on similar projects or when using a consistent project structure.

Projects can be cloned:

• Via a record-triggered flow (see Cloning Projects and Phases with Record-Triggered Flows for more information)
• Manually by users, via a 'Clone Project' button on the Opportunity or Project records (see below for step-by-step instructions to configure this functionality)

When the Project cloning functionality is configured to work manually, users can easily Clone Precursive Projects and Clone Project Phases, or you can quickly Create a Project Template that can be used as a starting point for future projects. Project Templates are added as options for the team to select when they Clone a Project Template from an Opportunity. They can decide what information should be copied into the new project (Phases, Activity/Task Categories, Participants, Bookings, Assigned Resources and Expense Categories) and quickly build their baseline. This can save a lot of time and effort when working on similar opportunities.

To set up manual cloning, you need to:

1. Install the Templates Package (please reach out to your Customer Success Manager, or your Implementation Manager if you are onboarding, to get the Package URL).
2. Follow the steps below to configure your Platform

 

Project Cloning prerequisites

Project, Phase and Participant cloning features require the separate Precursive Template package to be installed on your org.

If this package is not installed, please reach out to the Precursive Support team for a link to the most-recent version before attempting to follow the rest of this article.

How to Config Precursive Projects Cloning Functionality

1. Edit your Precursive Projects & Phases Page Layouts

1. Navigate to Salesforce Setup > then to Object Manager 
2. Use the Quick Find to search for 'Project' 
3. Open with Project or Precursive Project (depending on the version you are using) and go to page layouts section
4. For each Page Layout drag and drop ‘Is Template Project’ from the Fields section to add it to Project detail
5. Next, click 'Mobile and Lightning Actions' drag and drop ‘Clone Project’ to the Salesforce Mobile and Lightning Experience Actions section
6. Save 

Next, edit the Phase Page Layouts and add the 'Clone Phase' action button to be able to clone Project Phases separately:

1. Navigate back to the Object Manager 
2. Use the Quick Find to search for Phase
3. Select Phase, then Page Layouts
4. For each Page Layout select 'Mobile and Lightning Actions' and drag and drop the ‘Clone Phase’ to Salesforce Mobile and Lightning Experience Actions 
5. Save

 

2. Configure your Cloning Field Sets

1. (Precursive) Project
2. Phase
3. Participant
4. Booking
5. Activity/Task Category (depending on version)
6. Expense Category

1. Navigate to the Object Manager and select the Object you want to edit that Field Set for
2. Go to the 'Field Set' section
3. Click on 'Copy Field' to edit (see below for the Project object)
4. Add/remove fields to choose which fields should be copied when cloning a project 

Recommended Object Fields to include in the 'Copy Field':

3. Edit the Opportunity Page Layout to Clone Projects directly from your Opps

To speed up the creation of your projects baseline, you can allow your team to clone projects directly from an Opportunity record by adding the 'Clone Project' action button to your Opportunity Page Layout. To do that:

1. Go to the Object Manager and search for the 'Opportunity' Object
2. Select Opportunity then Page Layouts
3. For each Page Layout click Mobile and Lightning Actions and drag and drop ‘Clone Project Template’ to Saleforce Mobile and Lightning Experience Actions 
4. Save
