The Time Dependency between Tasks is always set as Finish to Start, from the End Date of a Predecessor Task to Start Date of the following Task. The task Complete Date is a separate field.

The End Date of a Task can be manually entered, rescheduled and edited as needed, whether the Complete Date is a timestamp automatically generated when someone marks a task as Complete.

What that means is that, if someone completes a Task any time before or after its End Date, the End Date does not change by default but the Task’s Complete Date will show the date and time when the task was marked as complete.

However, there is a way to have the system automatically recalculate the Tasks' End Date to reflect the Complete Date.

Note - You can either enable this feature individually following the steps below, or you can ask your Salesforce Admin to enable it for the whole organization. Please see Manage Org-wide Application Settings for more information.

How to Recalculate Tasks' End Date to reflect the Complete Date

  1. Navigate to the 'Application Settings' from the Precursive OBX TabApplication Settings.png
  2. Go to the 'Scheduling' Tab: there you will find 2 options that can be checked to have dependent tasks's Start Date automatically recalculated when predecessors are completed early or late:
  • Recalculate the Task’s End Date to reflect the Complete Date when a Task is completed early
  • Recalculate the Task’s End Date to reflect the Complete Date when a Task is completed laterecalcualte.png

What Happens to Successor Tasks?

When you set up Task Dependencies, if a Task is End Date postponed, the Successor Task is postponed too to respect the set Lead/Lag Days between these 2 Tasks. If the End Date is set to be recalculated to match the Complete Date, what happens depends on whether a Task is completed before or after their initially set End Date:
  • If a Task is completed later, Successor Task Start Date get automatically recalculated to respect the set Lead/Lag Days between these 2 Tasks.
  • If a Task is completed earlier, Successor Task Start Date do NOT get automatically recalculated. This is because Lead/Lag Days is the set minimum distance between Tasks. Even if a Task is completed earlier, the minimum distance between Tasks is still respected and nothing changes. Lag Days are not a fixed distance between Tasks.
