Lesson Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll have:
  • Build your Precursive Board Process Path (optional)
  • Build your first Precursive Board Type
  • Used your Board Type to create a Precursive Board

First things first: do you need a Precursive Process Path?

A Precursive Board Process Path is similar to an Opportunity process path. It includes the main stages of your project and it is displayed next to your Board's Name on the Precursive Workspace.

This is the third, optional element of a Board Type: you don’t have to create one to be able to build a Board Type. However, it makes it easier for PMs and Team Leaders to keep track of the progress on Precursive Boards.

The Process Path updates automatically if you have added a ‘Stage’ column to your Task Template and entered the relevant value for each Task. Otherwise, you can still build one and add it to your Board Type, but that will need to be updated manually by the PMs as their projects progress.

If you don’t want to miss out on this feature, please follow this step-by-step guide on How to Build a Precursive Board Process Path before moving to the next section.

Putting Everything Together!

It’s now time to see the result of your hard work and create your first Precursive Board Type!

And good news: this is the easiest step ever!! All you need to do is navigate to the ‘Precursive Board Types’ Tab, click new and fill the form in the window that opens up.

Make sure you don’t miss the fields below and the New Board Type will be immediately available for you and your team to use.

Name it & Activate it!

In the ‘Information’ section you can name your Board Type, make it ‘active’ and, if you want, you can also assign it a color of your choice. Every Board created using this Board Type, will then display that color on the top header.
You can leave the Board Template blank.

Tip - if you are planning to build more than one Board Type for your multiple products or internal processes, make sure you use names that make it easy for your team to distinguish between them. For example, you can name them according to the sold product: ‘Implementation Product A’, ‘Implementation Product B’ and so on.

Adding Templates & Board Process

Here you can search and select the Task & List Templates you have created. If you have decided to build a Board Process Path, you can also search and select that to be added to your Board Type.

For more information on the other available fields, please see our detailed guide on how to Set-up Precursive Board Types.

Test it Out!

We are all ready to visualize the results of your hard work!

From the Precursive OBX tab, select the Boards icon located on the navigation bar on the left-hand side to access the Board Menu and click ‘New Board’.
image11.png
In the window that opens up, name your Board, select the Board Type you have just created in the ‘Type’ field and click ‘Create’. Stage is actually optional.

If you have built a Process Path for your Board Type, you can also select the Stage you would like your project to start from.

The ‘Create with Template’ option will give you the possibility to select what Tasks from your Task Template you would like to include in your project. If your processes vary slightly from one another, you can decide to build one single Board Type that includes all the possible Tasks and then ask your team to exclude a certain set of them when creating a new project if they are not needed.

And voila! You have just created your first Precursive Project Board.

Does Your Creation Match Your Expectations?

Does the project plan look like you were expecting to on your Precursive Boards?

Have a look around, maybe also by changing Board View (see Board, Plan and Table View ), and double check that the result matches your expectations:

Project Start/End Dates
Are the start and end date of your project set up correctly?
Task Dependencies
Is time dependency and Tasks duration set up as expected?
Parent & Subtasks
Are Tasks and Subtasks easy to navigate?
Milestones
Are Milestones assigned to the right Tasks?
Stages
Is the Process Path updating automatically when completing Tasks?
Role Assignments
Are all Tasks assigned to the right roles?
Tasks Categories
Have all Tasks been assigned to the right Category?

If needed, you can revise your Task and List Templates and upload them again. You will only need to validate them again in that case - they are already linked to your Board Type so you won’t need to add them to it again or create a new one.

If you are not using a Board Process Path with Stages linked to sets of Tasks and you are a visual person, you can also decide to work directly on the Board and create Precursive Board Templates and relevant Board Type from there.

Review your work with your team and start running your project in Precursive!
